Salmonellosis is the second most commonly reported gastrointestinal infection and an important cause of food-borne outbreaks in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA). In 2015, 95,595 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported; the EU/EEA notification rate was 22.9 cases per 100,000 population.
